I was talking with a friend the other day about how Artificial Intelligence isn\u2019t a new concept and was trying to explain how there are several different types of AI techniques and they all offer unique capabilities. I love analogies and I finally had an Aha! moment\u2026 AI are like onions!<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Artificial Intelligence is a fascinating field of study, founded by a group of researchers at Dartmouth College in 1956. Over the years, various techniques have been developed and now all I can think about is how AI and its various subsets are like an onion.<\/p>\n

I even created a fun infographic \ud83d\udc46\ud83c\udffb<\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence<\/em>\u00a0is a general term for the field of study and involves techniques that equip computers to emulate human behavior. It enables learning by recognizing patterns, making predictions, and solving complex problems.<\/p>\n

Machine learning<\/em>\u00a0is a subset of AI that focuses on using data and algorithms to learn from large data sets. These algorithms are used to build models which can cluster data based on commonalities, categorize events based on labels, and predict values based on historical data.<\/p>\n

Neural Networks<\/em>\u00a0is an advanced form of machine learning where computers start to process data in a way that\u2019s inspired by the human brain. A neural network contains layers of neurons that perform individual computations. The more layers you add, the deeper your network becomes.<\/p>\n

Deep learning<\/em>\u00a0is yet another subset of AI that uses these neural networks for even more in-depth data processing. They\u2019re able to learn from any data type and excel in complex environments to solve a variety of problems, including image recognition, natural language processing, and speech recognition.<\/p>\n

Generative Intelligence<\/em>\u00a0relies on deep learning models to learn all kinds of complex subject matter like human language, programming languages, chemistry, biology, and even art. It then has the capability to generate content like text, images, audio, or video based on a provided input, called prompts. You might be familiar with GenAI if you\u2019ve ever heard of or used the tool ChatGPT.<\/p>\n

Since ChatGPT launched in 2022, we\u2019ve seen a surge in AI innovation and the creation of new GenAI tools that offer enormous productivity benefits for individuals and organizations. Almost all organizations use these types of tools now in some capacity, including internal audit departments!<\/p>\n
