And don\u2019t get me wrong &#8211; data literacy\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0critical.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the uncomfortable truth:<\/p>\n<p>Too often, we use \u201cdata literacy\u201d as a crutch when\u00a0<em>we<\/em>\u00a0don\u2019t fully understand what executives actually need.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s easier to default to training stakeholders on how to read dashboards or interpret KPIs than to dig into the messy, complex, and sometimes ambiguous process of uncovering true executive priorities. When a dashboard doesn\u2019t land or a request feels misaligned, we might shrug it off with,\u00a0<em>\u201cThey just need more data literacy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But what if that\u2019s the wrong diagnosis?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>When \u201cData Literacy\u201d Becomes a Cop-Out<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let\u2019s be honest &#8211; executives didn\u2019t get to where they are by being unable to understand numbers. They understand performance, risk, tradeoffs, and value creation. What they often\u00a0<em>don\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0get from data teams is clarity on how data connects directly to their business decisions and outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>When we assume the problem is data literacy, we might be overlooking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Poor communication of business value<\/li>\n<li>Metrics that don\u2019t match strategic priorities<\/li>\n<li>Analysis that answers the wrong question<\/li>\n<li>Lack of context or storytelling to support insight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In these cases,\u00a0<em>improving data literacy won\u2019t fix the disconnect<\/em>. The real problem isn\u2019t a lack of understanding &#8211; it\u2019s a lack of alignment.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why the Gap Exists<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are a few key reasons why this gap persists:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>We\u2019re solving for data, not decisions.<\/strong>\u00a0We spend time perfecting models, pipelines, and dashboards &#8211; sometimes forgetting to ask:\u00a0<em>what decision will this enable?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Executives speak outcomes; we speak inputs.<\/strong>\u00a0They care about revenue, risk, and strategic positioning. We talk about schemas, refresh rates, and row-level security.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data literacy feels safer.<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s easier to create a training course than to schedule time with a C-suite exec and ask them directly what\u2019s missing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>How Do We Remove the Crutch?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Bridging the gap requires humility, curiosity, and a shift in mindset. Here\u2019s how we start:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>1. Flip the Narrative<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instead of asking, \u201cWhy don\u2019t they understand the data?\u201d ask,\u00a0<em>\u201cWhy don\u2019t we understand their goals?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Make it a habit to lead with\u00a0<em>business<\/em>\u00a0questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What outcome are we driving?<\/li>\n<li>What decisions are at stake?<\/li>\n<li>What\u2019s the cost of inaction?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>2. Engage Early and Often<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Don\u2019t wait for a project to be \u201cdone\u201d before showing it to leadership. Involve executives during framing &#8211; not just during rollout. Co-create definitions and success criteria.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>3. Translate, Don\u2019t Just Teach<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Data storytelling isn\u2019t just about being visual or accessible. It\u2019s about connecting the dots between the numbers and what executives\u00a0<em>care<\/em>\u00a0about &#8211; strategy, customers, growth, and risk.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>4. Build Empathy, Not Just Literacy<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Instead of one-way literacy programs, consider two-way learning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teach execs how your data flows &#8211; but also\u00a0<em>learn how their decisions unfold.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Run joint sessions between data teams and business leaders.<\/li>\n<li>Use business impact maps, decision trees, and role-playing to understand pain points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Final Thought: Data Literacy\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0Business Fluency<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We need both.
