EdTech Series: The AI That Improves Learning Doesn’t Remove Thinking by Rosie Riveters’ Brittany Greer
The question facing schools is no longer simply whether students will use artificial intelligence. It is whether that use will improve what students learn. It is surprisingly easy to confuse a better product with a better learning outcome. AI can help a student finish an assignment faster or produce more polished writing. But neither proves that the student understands more.
EdTech Series: AI in Education: What’s Actually Improving Learning? by Pocket Prep’s Michelle Marlowe, PMP
At Pocket Prep, we help people prepare for certification exams that determine whether they get licensed, promoted, or hired, and most already use AI in some form. As the person responsible for ensuring our learners pass exams and retain the knowledge they need to apply it in the field, I am always researching best practices for implementing AI in education. AI improves learning when it’s designed to make the learner do the thinking, and it gets in the way when it does the thinking for them.
EdTech Series: AI Can Solve Homework, But Can the Student Pass the Test? by Vibeke Gwendoline Faengsrud
I failed high school math. Over the next 20 years, I earned a master’s degree in mathematics, wrote 11 books on the subject, and delivered a TEDx Talk about mathematics learning. None of that happened with artificial intelligence.
EdTech Series: Mission-Driven AI Policymaking in Education by Salena Davis
Policymakers must have hated Gutenberg. Imagine how many wars and conflicts may have been avoided if “right policies” were in place before the advent of the printing press! And yet, nearly 600 years later, we still haven’t figured out a formula for developing policies and procedures quickly enough to keep pace with technological developments.
EdTech Series: AI in Education: What’s Actually Improving Learning? by Kimberley Langen
A student sits down with a difficult math problem, opens an AI chatbot, and has the correct answer within seconds, complete with steps that look reasonable and an explanation that reads clearly, so the homework gets finished and the technology appears to have made learning easier. Ask that same student to solve a similar problem with the chatbot closed, and you will likely see something very different.
EdTech Series: When AI Tutoring Helps: Timing Support Around the Learner by Meryll Dindin
In kindergarten through grade 12, the work of instruction is building cognition itself: attention, working memory, the capacity to hold an argument long enough to write it down. An adult who hands a spreadsheet formula to an assistant loses little. A 12-year-old who hands over the reasoning step skips the exercise the lesson was built around, which makes timing a central design decision in a tutor.
EdTech Series: The Best AI Tool in the Classroom is the Teacher by Webs Weber
AI on its own likely doesn’t help learners learn. In a skilled educator’s hands, it widens translation, accessibility, and the teacher’s reach. Ask whether AI improves learning and you’ll get two loud answers, one from the people selling it and one from the people banning it. The truth, as is often observed, falls somewhere in between.
EdTech Series: AI in Education: What’s Actually Improving Learning? by Madhavi Chandra
When higher education leaders talk about artificial intelligence and learning, the conversation usually moves quickly to the classroom. We hear about AI tutors, personalized instruction, course content and new ways faculty might use technology to understand where students are struggling.
