Databricks Unveils SQL Analytics for BI on Data Lakes

Databricks recently announced the launch of SQL Analytics, a cloud data warehouse that integrates with BI tools and enables users to query recent data in data lakes. According to the provider, this release expands the traditional scope of the data lake “from data science and machine learning to include all data workloads including business intelligence (BI) and SQL.” The release comes on the heels of the company’s unveiling of Delta Engine in June. SQL Analytics is built on Delta Lake, Databricks’ open format data engine that adds a variety of key components to data lakes.

Databricks offers a unified analytics platform that allows users to prepare and clean data at scale and continuously train and deploy machine learning models for AI applications. The product handles all analytic deployments, ranging from ETL to model training and deployment. It is also available as a fully managed service on Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services.

SQL Analytics provides simple auto-scaling endpoints that keep query latency consistently under high user load. It also uses Delta Engine to complete queries against both large and small data sets. It features connectors to all major BI tools as well so users can integrate SQL Analytics into their existing BI workflows. Databricks built in a SQL-native query and visualization interface as well.

In a media statement about the news, Databricks co-founder and CEO Ali Ghodsi said: “We’ve worked with thousands of customers to understand where they want to take their data strategy, and the answer is overwhelmingly in favor of data lakes. The fact is that they have massive amounts of data in their data lakes and with SQL Analytics, they now can actually query that data by connecting directly to their BI tools like Tableau.”

Databricks SQL Analytics is available in public preview beginning November 18th.
