Flexera: 57 Percent of Companies Expect Cloud Usage to Increase Due to COVID-19

According to a survey released today by Flexera, 57 percent of companies expect that their cloud usage will increase due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This statistic comes from the 2020 State of the Cloud report which surveyed 750 global cloud decision-makers regarding public, private and multi-cloud options and adoption. Flexera found that cloud adoption continues to increase, but companies are expecting to adjust cloud usage and budgets as the coronavirus continues to change how businesses operate.

Our MSP Buyer’s Guide contains profiles on the top cloud managed service providers for AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, as well as questions you should ask vendors and yourself before buying. We also offer an MSP Vendor Map that outlines those vendors in a Venn diagram to make it easy for you to select potential providers.

The highlight of the Flexera report is the company’s findings on how cloud solutions are changing in response to COVID-19. Flexera took a smaller sample size of respondents and asked them how they expected cloud usage to change in response to coronavirus. Of the 187 respondents, 67 percent believed that cloud usage would change — 57 percent saying that it will increase and 10 percent that it will decrease. This suggests that the majority of organizations are relying on cloud solutions to keep them afloat during this time.

Other noteworthy findings include statistics on multicloud and hybrid cloud adoption. Flexera discovered that multicloud and hybrid cloud adoption has become almost a new normal, with 87 percent stating they had a hybrid cloud deployment and 6 percent claiming multiple public clouds — compared to 6 percent for single public clouds and only 1 percent for a single private cloud. The rise of the hybrid cloud shows that companies are open to the idea of multiple deployment types to avoid lock-in and reliance on one cloud provider.

In the company’s official press release, Flexera’s President and CEO Jim Ryan stated: “The State of the Cloud survey captures insights into how organizations are progressing in their journey to cloud. That journey is even more important for businesses today as we face the unprecedented operational impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. With employees working from home and more business interactions going digital, more than half of enterprise respondents said their cloud usage will be higher than originally planned at the beginning of the year due to the pandemic. Companies plan to migrate more services to cloud, yet they’re already exceeding cloud budgets. They will need to focus on optimizing workloads as they migrate in addition to cost management and governance to ensure operational efficiency.”
