What you Need to Know about Cloud Management Platforms

What you Need to Know about Cloud Management PlatformsWith Cloud Service Platforms growing more and more popular by the second, it’s important to consider the importance of Cloud Management Platforms (CMPs), the challenges they present and what to look for in a cloud platform.

A good CMP ensures that applications and workloads are running in approved clouds based on established service management, governance and compliance policies. Everything needs to run the way you want it to.

CMPs can also become a powerful tool in infrastructure management. CMP provides high visibility into software license usage and cost containment. It can sometimes be hard to manage which software is in use in which cloud.

With the benefits of CMPs. there are also a few challenges that need to be addressed when adopting a CMP. There is a lot of planning that needs to go into a CMP; it will never be ready just as it is.

A lot of planning needs to take place. There needs to be assurance that all the applications and workloads are running in the appropriate cloud end-point. There also needs to be a boundary in how many resources can be added before alerts are sent that an application may not be running correctly. Security must also be considered.

Cost is another common challenge that faces businesses seeking CMPs. The bottom line is, the bigger the business, the more expensive the platform is going to be. There are cheaper options available for most CMPs, but they won’t offer the features and functionality most organizations desire.

With all this in mind, it is important to know what to look for in a CMP.  It may be in your best interest to look for a CMP that will position you to use other platform end-points like Amazon, Rackspace or Azure.

You may also want to look for a CMP that provides easy retrieval of consumption of cloud and platform resources, and if CMO allows images to be ported from one cloud environment to another. This is useful for businesses that may want to perform application development in a hybrid or multi-cloud environment.
