Should Your Backup Live in a Data Center or the Cloud?

Cloud computing has become extremely popular over the last five years, but some enterprises haven’t pulled the trigger when it comes to migrating their data. That left us wondering, why haven’t they made the move? And where is your data better protected? On the ground or in the cloud?

Flip the script

Those who have yet to move to the cloud may cite security fears and a lack of control. Or perhaps they don’t have the resources to move their current data to the cloud. According to zdnet.com, those who chose not to move their data were cautious due to a lack of security and control. However, that has changed, and now an IT department may have to explain to a C-Suite executive why they prefer to run something on-prem when there are similar options in the public cloud. However, it’s important to note that many organizations are still using their own data centers, private cloud or hybrid cloud.

Cloud-first apps

Many organizations in the enterprise are deciding to go cloud-first. And as zdnet.com reports, it’s hard to explain why you would run email, CRM or ERP on-prem. However, releasing custom apps or moving legacy apps is a different ballgame.

Cloud brings innovation, not cost savings

Many first changed to the cloud thinking that the move would save money. Although, as zdnet.com pointed out, that’s not always the case. Those who migrate to the cloud are often focused on a modern architecture that will enable them to take advantage of forward-thinking technology.

“And, being in the cloud insures that your business will always have access to the next big leap in tech without a big infrastructure upgrade. In other words, it’s about agility,” zdnet.com reported.
