ESPN Scores 2.3 Million Premiere League Goals with July Systems

ESPN Goals App

ESPN Goals AppESPN’s Goals App has seen tremendous success over the course of the past few years.  Released originally in 2010 needing a paid subscription for access, the sports giant, on the advice of July Systems released the App in 2011 as a free version for the 2011 to 2012 season. The result? The app was downloaded 2.3 million times, versus 400,000 subscriptions for the 2010-2011 season.

That switch, as well as the Goals app, is thanks to July Systems, whose cloud-based Mi™ Platform allows the creation, management, measurement and marketing of mobile apps across multiple devices and operating systems. July Systems had advised ESPN to go with a free version of their app because “we knew there were a number of brands out there who would want to be involved with the Premier League but could not pay the prices or go direct with the clubs, so advertising on a mobile format was a better solution.”

The ESPN Goals App “offers video clips of every Premier League goal shortly after they’re scored,” according to a SportBusiness Group article from 2012.

For me, it will be interesting to see if the results from 2012-2013 can keep up that torrid pace of growth and how well ESPN can monetize the app from advertising opportunities. While a purely anecdotal evidence, members of the Solutions Review office, as of this posting, can’t wait to go home and download the ESPN Goals app onto their iPads. That has to be good news.

Can you say GOOOOAAAAAAAAL!!!?
