Low Code Enterprise App Development Could Put and End to Shadow IT

Code Shadow IT

One of the biggest talking points in enterprise app development this year has been the explosion of low code development platforms and the total impact it will continue to have on the enterprise. Taking the bulk of work out of the hands of developers can free them up for more skillful projects and leave the actual design to the people who are going to be using the apps.

This brings us to shadow IT. The biggest issue facing currently facing IT when it comes to enterprise apps is people using third party apps that are not approved by IT. Employees are storing corporate data in places where other data is stored and you have no control over the security of that data. Unfortunately, Shadow IT is more prominent than you may realize, especially because a lot of employees aren’t even aware they’re going anything wrong.

In order to solve the Shadow IT problem in your business is to get to the root of the problem; why do employees feel the need to use third party apps? Since these apps are mostly consumer facing, they are easy to use and even though they don’t offer the tailored features custom apps do, it’s much easier for them to use an easier app with less features than a poorly designed app with more features.

With the demand for enterprise apps being so high and the amount of developers available so low, apps may not always be tailored to specific needs the way that employees want them to be. If they don’t like to use the app they’ve been given, they just won’t use it and most likely, they’ll find an alternative. With low code platforms, the actual users can build and design the apps that they want to use.

This brings on the notion of ‘citizen developers’ and the new frontier of app development. These new apps can be great, but they don’t exclude the developer completely. These new low code apps may have to connect back to and be compatible with legacy apps that don’t work the same way. Developers are going to be needed to integrate these apps and make sure the work with older apps that still need to be accessed.

What low code development platforms offer is a new way to organize and deploy all the apps you need in your enterprise. Developers are still needed for maintenance and back end development,  but having the users design and build the apps will severly increase the chances that employees will use is and be more productive while using it.
