2016 Gartner MADP Magic Quadrant: What’s Changed Since 2015?

2016 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Mobile App Development Platforms

Gartner has just released their 2016 Magic Quadrant for Mobile Application Development Platforms and have declared this year’s top performers in the MADP space. This past year has been huge for enterprise mobile applications as businesses are moving towards becoming mobile and adapting to the the lifestyle change that is the smartphone era. People are used to using their phones for everything from scheduling appointments to ordering food, and that level of efficiency has the potential to directly return a higher productivity level to the enterprise.

Gartner says that “by 2020, more than 75% of enterprises will have adopted at least one mobile app development platform to accelerate their digital business transformation strategy, up from approximately 33% in 2015.” This statement holds firm as we’re seeing a shortage of developers and an increase in rapid mobile app development (RMAD) that allows non developers to create secure and functional enterprise level apps. This is one of the most exciting periods in app development history and MADPs are the key making sure this explosion in enterprise apps runs smoothly.

When we spoke to Jason Wong of Gartner back in February, we discussed the demand for enterprise mobile apps. “We’re definitely seeing a sprawling demand for RMAD tools by businesses,” said Wong. “There’s IT that’s trying to meet the demand of the business units to fulfill all these mobile apps they need for employees, business partners and even consumers, but there’s just not enough skilled mobile developers at this point. It can be very expensive to hire and train [new developers] because the demand for these business talents is also so great that it’s hard to retain them.”

MADPs do much more than just build the apps. They are essential to testing, deploying, distributing, managing and analyzing the apps across different devices and use cases. Not all platforms are created equal and it’s more important than ever for you to choose the right one for your business as you start building your many enterprise mobile apps.

Vendors in this year’s quadrant include: Adobe, Appcelerator, Appian, Backbase, DSI, Embarcadero, IBM, Kony and more.

As usual, vendors are evaluated on their completeness of vision or likely hood of future success in the MADP Market. This criteria includes market understanding, marketing strategy, sales strategy, product strategy, business model, vertical/industry strategy, innovation and geographic strategy.

They are also evaluated on their ability to execute or ability to meet the current needs of MADP buyers. The criteria includes product/service, overall viability, sales execution/pricing, market responsiveness/record, marketing execution, customer experience and operations.
