AppSense Helps to Answer the Question: MDM or MAM?

With enterprise mobility on the rise and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programs proliferating organizations, AppSense has just release a solution that combines Mobile Device Management (MDM) and Mobile Application Management (MAM). There has been a lot of talk about the “death of MDM” and the needed focus on application and data security rather then the on hardware itself. A case can be made that MAM is a more applicable solution for personally own devices accessing corporate network, but at the same time MDM may be the preferred solutions for corporate owned devices since there has been investment in the actual hardware by the enterprise.

Admittedly, personal devices entering the enterprise through BYOD programs are on the rise, but we do not feel that corporate owned and issued devices are a thing of the past. AppSense’s new MobileNow solution may help IT department answer the question of MAM or MDM and cover all their bases. Working with Android, iOS and soon Windows Phone 8, MobileNow brings a nice combination of MAM, MDM and native encrypted email together. A key feature to the MobileNow MAM capabilities is the ability to wrap application without having to make changes to code. Once wrapped it can be separated using encryption and policies from a user’s personal applications. MobileNow brings some of the classic MDM device management feature with the ability to control access to the camera, access to features such as iCloud and the ability to take screen captures. Remote wipe, lock and password protection feature are also offer on both the IT and end user sides.
