Appian Study: How Will Businesses Return Employees to the Workplace During COVID-19?Appian recently partnered with LeadToMarket (LTM) Research to survey Human Resources (HR) professionals. The purpose of this survey was to understand how organizations are preparing to bring employees back to the workplace during the uncertainty of COVID-19. The study specifically analyzed organizational tactics, strategies, timelines for returning employees, and the top concerns of HR leaders. The COVID-19 HR Survey: Returning the Workforce to the Workplace report shows results from 200 HR professionals working at companies with more than one thousand employees in the United States. The study unveiled that the majority of businesses are more tactical than strategic in their approach.

Data from the survey shows that most organizations are focused on tactical safety procedures. These procedures include requiring face masks for employees (100 percent of respondents), reducing capacity to facilitate social distancing (79 percent), sanitizing the workplace throughout the workday (78 percent), and conducting daily health screenings (71 percent). Though these processes are essential to maintain employee safety, they don’t prepare businesses to respond to health threats quickly.

HR software technology can provide HR leaders with capabilities that include:

  • The ability to collect large amounts of data in a single, easy-to-view location;
  • Unifying data to track potential outbreaks and coordinate responses, and
  • Quickly reacting and adapting to sick employees to prevent the workforce from spreading COVID-19.

In a press statement, CEO of Appian, Matt Calkins, said, “software is essential for a safe return to the workplace. When dealing with the health and well being of hundreds or thousands of people, businesses need the speed that software delivers in tracking daily health updates, monitoring test results, identifying potential exposures, and conducting contact tracing.”

Additional findings from the study include:

  • 97 percent of those surveyed feel they do not need to invest in technology solutions to achieve a safe return to the workplace.
  • 89 percent of respondents feel they do not need new software to manage their return to work COVID-19 response policy.
  • 53 percent of respondents have already begun returning employees to the office.
  • Less than a quarter (23 percent) of survey participants are concerned that their return-to-work technology does not provide contact tracing.
  • The vast majority (98 percent) of respondents note that their organizations have permanently altered their workforce structure to increase remote work.
