Taking a Look at this Year’s All Day DevOps Sessions

Last week’s All Day DevOps sessions were a tremendous success. The event hosted over 120 speakers who discussed DevSecOps, CI/CD, cloud native infrastructure, cultural transformation, site reliability engineering, as well as six keynotes. All Day DevOps offers a unique space for enterprise technology professionals to learn. Viewers gain access to experts discussing their space while chatting via Slack. Although you can’t chat on Slack until next year, all sessions are available on the All Day DevOps website.

DevSecOps

The DevSecOps subcategory has 27 sessions to explore. Although the event calls itself All Day DevOps, they recognize that DevOps alone isn’t enough. Security must be a priority and each session explores specific areas of importance. For example, speakers discuss application security, automation, Docker image provenance, and many more.

Cobalt.io’s vice president, Caroline Wong delivered a session called “Why Does Security Matter for DevOps?” I highly recommend watching, as Caroline captures the importance of security in DevOps.

CI/CD

For CI/CD, 19 sessions were presented by experts around the world. CI/CD is one of the crucial components of a successful DevOps strategy. Or even just modernization in general. Sessions cover topics like Kubernetes, microservices, app delivery, and more.

Considering our propensity towards containers and Kubernetes, I recommend watching Hüseyin Babal’s session, “Microservice Architecture on Kubernetes.”

Cloud Native Infrastructure

Cloud native infrastructure and DevOps go together like birds and power lines. Birds love sitting on power lines, but without security, they’ll get zapped. This completely unnecessary metaphor emphasizes the importance of a functional cloud native infrastructure. The 19 sessions on this topic get into more detail about various areas on infrastructure.

I recommend watching Camilo Andrés Cortés Hernández’s talk on “Managed Kubernetes Platforms.” This should be an obvious choice, considering our emphasis on managed service providers. Another to watch is Karthik Gaekwad’s “KubeSecOps: Kubernetes Security Practices You Should Follow.” Kubernetes lacks proper security on its own, so this session aligns perfectly with our coverage of Kubernetes.

Cultural Transformation

Perhaps the most notable component to DevOps, cultural transformation had the most sessions at 28. Without the proper knowledge, a cultural transformation has potential to cause a lot of stress. Sessions in this category cover a variety of areas like networks, audits, security, government DevOps, as well as education DevOps. And that only names a few.

I recommend watching Marc Cluet’s session called, “The DevOps Journey – How to Get There Painlessly.” Also, be sure to check out Shira Rubinoff’s “How to Create the Proper Cybersecurity Culture Within Your Business – The Human Factors Approach.”

Site Reliability Engineering

Site reliability engineering (SRE) comes with a variety of approaches. It involves testing, failure, and even chaos. Gremlin offers a solution that introduces controlled chaos to test resiliency. Gremlin Engineer, Ana Medina presented a session called “Getting Started With Chaos Engineering.” This session is worth watching to learn a new way to conduct SRE.

Another must-watch session is Jennifer Petoff’s “Deploying SRE Training Best Practices to Production: What we Learned AKA Strapping Jetpacks on Unicorns, the Postmortem.” Jennifer has years of SRE experience and works as the senior program manager for Google’s SRE team in Dublin. She also co-created the best selling book, Site Reliability Engineering: How Google Runs Production Systems.
