From the Boardroom to the Classroom: Lightspeed Introduces MDM Specifically for K-12

BYOD K-12 Mobile devices have been flooding the enterprise to improve business processes, but we are also seeing school district across the country bringing in mobile end devices in order to improve education. Whether it is a 1:1 device/student ratio being provided by the district or “BYOD” initiatives, the mobility they provide allow educators to engage the students in a different and more technology savvy way. Just because these initiative are taking place in a different environment does not alleviate K-12 IT Departments of the same concerns the enterprise goes though. With new devices and increased access to network information and data, security, maintenance, rollouts and use are all issues that need to be managed and upheld.

Lightspeed Systems is looking to help in that process by releasing a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution specifically tailored for the K-12 environment, Lightspeed Mobile Device Management. The solutions targets student and network safety while allowing educators to take full advantage to the new technology in the classroom when trying educate students. A recent press release outlines such capabilities:

•User-friendly interface with multiples levels of administration – ensuring neither IT staff nor classroom teachers are overburdened with management and everyone has the visibility and control they need
•Hierarchical controls, giving districts the ability to set policies at the district, school, classroom, and device level
•Centralized management of device inventory, reporting, updates, and installs – simplifying the day-to-day tasks of the IT staff
•Remote configuration and device wiping to make certain the safety of the network and student are never compromised
•Integration with the Apple Volume Purchasing Plan
•Application deployment and device lockdown – able to be managed by both teachers and IT through My Big Campus
•All on an easy to use interface made specifically for K12

While the solution is in beta the full solution will be made available for school districts this summer. Brian Thomas, President of Lightspeed Systems, is quoted as saying “At Lightspeed, we are passionate about education and equipping districts with the tools necessary for safe learning. We know mobile devices are changing the way teachers teach and students learn and with the release of the Lightspeed Mobile Device Management solution we are committed to working together with schools to accomplish their mobile learning goals.”
