The BYOD Technology is Here But Where are the CIOs?

The technology for BYOD and EMM has been around for quite a while but over the past few years it has really taken off due to our dependence on mobility. With all of this hype around the convenience, security and cost effectiveness, you would think that every CIO would be on top of getting the best BYOD and EMM solution for their enterprise, but the numbers are staggeringly low.

According to an article by Mary Brittain-White for Enterprise App Tech, mainstream topics like BYOD, mobile cloud and enterprise app stores are all under 20 percent market penetration. That means that most enterprises and corporations have their employees walking around with sensitive data on their devices with minimal security.

It has also been reported by the 2014 State of Mobile Apps survey that less than 10 percent of enterprises has a mobile budget of $100k or more. That number won’t get you much for an EMM solution especially if your company is midmarket to large.

This problem with CIOs is also contributing to the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a clear top dog EMM or BYOD solution. There are a lot of smaller vendors that are hoping when the CIOs finally “join the party,” they will be more likely to give them a chance rather than just going with the biggest name and calling it a day.

There is also the case of company heads not realizing how important it is to have mobile security and functionality for the employees. Just handing an employee a smartphone, letting them use it for anything they want and footing the entire bill is completely wrong way to handle mobility. It’s not secure and you’re throwing money down the toilet in the long run. Phone bills are only going to get more expensive, and mobile devices are only going to become more prominent in everyday life; not taking the steps to protect the corporation and the employee before there is a major security breach, is like shooting yourself in the foot and expecting to still be able to run a marathon.

Mobile enterprise is popular, there’s no denying that but the actual initiatives of the CIOs to select and integrate an EMM, MDM or BYOD solution has been severely lacking.
