Business Driven Data Strategy - The Route to Success in 2024
I was playing my trumpet this morning and thought about strategy as one does!
Here are my thoughts:
If you are thinking of crafting or refreshing your business-driven data strategy for 2024, then please think of it as a three-tiered symphony.
At the top are the objectives and goals, which lead us to strategies, and finally converging on the ground where the tactical brilliance unfolds.
Here’s why thinking in three levels is the key to unlocking your success.
1. The Business Strategy
At the apex, you should your compass with clear objectives and goals – typically your North Star or business strategy – guiding the organisation’s trajectory. Maybe you are in pursuit of unprecedented growth, revenue milestones, cost optimisation, or regulatory compliance, this is where you understand your measurable targets.
2. Strategies: Bridging the North Star into Reality
Here we meet the critical bridge or the strategies. Each objective requires a strategy and roadmap for achievement. Strategies are the deliberate manoeuvres or use cases that transform your business strategy into executable plans. Adopting a use case view and drives where your data strategy.
3. Tactics: Executing the Plan
On the ground level, where the rubber meets the road, tactics take centre stage. These are the finely tuned actions delivered through your operating model and breathe life into your strategies. It could be about deploying marketing campaigns, optimizing processes, and ensuring every tactical move aligns with the grander strategy. This is where the magic happens—or, if not, where swift adjustments are made.
From Tactics to Objectives and Back Again
If your tactics falter, it’s not a retreat; it’s a recalibration. Swiftly, assess whether your strategies are aligned, tweaking them for maximum impact. If the challenge persists, it’s time to ascend once more to the objectives and goals. Perhaps a fundamental shift is needed, a recalibration of the North Star itself.
In this iterative dance, success is not linear. It’s the ability to flex and adapt at every tier. If tactics aren’t delivering the expected results, it’s not a failure—it’s an invitation to reassess and evolve.
This three-tiered approach ensures that every move, from the vision to the minutest detail, is purposeful, agile, and constantly refined for peak performance.
So, as you embark on your data strategy for 2024, think about the symphony played across three levels. Let your objectives be the melody, strategies the harmony, and tactics the rhythm.
In this orchestra, success becomes not just achievable but inevitable.
