Evolving the Learning Process: Adding "Learn One" to "See One, Do One, Teach One"
In the ever-evolving innovative world around us, it’s imperative to reassess traditional learning methodologies and adapt them to the needs of the modern era (if needed, of course).
“See One, Do One, Teach One” has long been a staple in various fields, particularly medicine and hands-on professions. However, in today’s interconnected world, where knowledge sharing is abundant and diverse, I think it’s time to enhance this approach by incorporating a crucial step: “Learn One.”
Adding “Learn One” to the sequence acknowledges that true mastery and comprehension occur not just through repetition but through the active engagement of explaining concepts to others. This approach fosters a culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration, where individuals are empowered to not only learn from others but also contribute to the collective pool of understanding.
When you teach, you’re not merely regurgitating information; you’re deciphering it, internalizing it, and then articulating it in a way that resonates with others. In this process, you not only reinforce your knowledge but also gain valuable insights into how others perceive and understand the same concepts.
Imagine this revised sequence in action:
- πππ ππ§π: Begin by observing and absorbing knowledge or skills from various sourcesβbe it through lectures, demonstrations, or real-world experiences.
- ππ¨ ππ§π: Actively engage in applying what you’ve learned through practical exercises, projects, or simulations. This step solidifies your understanding through hands-on experience.
- πππππ‘ ππ§π: Share your knowledge with others. Whether it’s mentoring a colleague, leading a workshop, or creating educational content, teaching not only reinforces your understanding but also fosters a collaborative learning environment where insights are exchanged and enriched.
- ππππ«π§ ππ§π: Before proceeding to teach others, take the time to delve deeper into the subject matter. Research, explore alternative perspectives, and strive to grasp the intricacies of the topic beyond surface-level understanding.
- πππ©πππ: Embrace a continuous cycle of learning, doing, and teaching. Each iteration offers opportunities for growth and refinement as you encounter new perspectives and challenges.
Integrating “Learn One” into the traditional sequence encourages a more holistic approach to learningβone that emphasizes not just the acquisition of knowledge but also the cultivation of critical thinking, communication, and adaptability of skills. Try it yourself; I do this daily, have you seen my posts? Are you learning with me? I know it’s working for me.
