In the Wake of Their Recent Acquisition Meraki Releases a WLAN Upgrade

Cisco Acquires Meraki

Cisco Acquires MerakiIn the wake of the recent Cisco/Meraki acquisition Meraki has just announced an upgrade to their already impressive wireless LAN solutions. The upgrade applies specifically to its MR series wireless access points. Visibility, control and management are all addressed in their solution upgrade that is delivered via the cloud.

Meraki is addressing management and control through an upgrade that will allow customers to simplify large scale distributed networks, and by introducing Bonjour Gateway feature. For example the Bonjour Gateway feature may allow a school district to “maintain separate VLANs for teachers, students, AirPlay devices, and printers. Now, that school can deploy flexible policies, like enabling AirPlay exclusively for teachers, while allowing AirPrint for both teachers and students.” Organization with dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of sites and struggle to maintain access and policy control across different locations may benefit greatly from Meraki’s new upgrade. Through the introduction of tag-based configuration and management engines organizations can now, “tag sites by brand, function (retail, corporate, warehouse.), geographic region, etc. and can instantly apply access control policies, branded splash pages, and other settings to any number of sites.

Meraki’s upgrade will also allow for greater visibility into data moving across a network. The Layer 7 application fingerprinting and shaping will allow, “Administrators to see a dynamic view of traffic classified by application, spot trends in usage, and quickly set traffic shaping policies accordingly.” Best of all, for current customers the upgrade is free and can be delivered over the web through Meraki’s cloud based solution.
