Oracle recently announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire enterprise data science platform provider DataScience.com. DataScience.com provides the tools, libraries, and languages that data scientists use to run complex analysis. The company had raised $28 million in venture capital since its founding in 2014. The merger will enable Oracle to provide its customers with a unified data science platform that utilizes Oracle Cloud infrastructure and its SaaS and PaaS platforms. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Gartner defines data science and machine learning platforms are defined as a “cohesive software application that offers a mixture of basic building blocks essential both for creating many kinds of data science solution.” Data science and machine learning platforms support data scientists in their efforts for data access, data preparation, data visualization, and a variety of predictive analytic functions.

In a media statement, the Vice President of Oracle’s cloud computing unit Amit Zavery said: “With the combination of Oracle and DataScience.com, customers will be able to harness a single data science platform to more effectively leverage machine learning and big data for predictive analysis and improved business results.” DataScience.com’s CEO Ian Swanson added: “We are extremely enthusiastic about joining forces with Oracle’s leading cloud platform so customers can realize the benefits of their investments in data science.’

Oracle offers traditional reporting and dashboards via the Business Intelligence 12c tool. Modern product capabilities are included in its data visualization product, which provides advanced data visualization, data preparation, self-service, and advanced analytics. The company’s Big Data Discovery feature set is a Hadoop-based data science platform that supports both on-prem and web-based authoring. This acquisition will no doubt help Oracle expand its data science footprint in a market headed for considerable growth in the months and years ahead.
