RedHat’s CoreOS Announces Kubernetes Toolkit – Operator Framework

RedHat’s CoreOS Announces New Kubernetes Toolkit

RedHat’s CoreOS Announces New Kubernetes Toolkit
RedHat’s recent acquisition of CoreOS was a container game changer. Operator Framework is the first major announcement since then. Operator Framework is an open source toolkit that manages Kubernetes native applications in a more efficient, automated, and scalable way.

The Kubernetes native applications are called “operators,” which is a concept introduced by CoreOS in 2016. An Operator manages, deploys, and packages a Kubernetes application.

The Operator Framework empowers the Operators by providing developer and runtime Kubernetes tools. The main feature of this product is the SDK, lifecycle management, and metering capabilities. The press release details:

  • Operator SDK: Enables developers to build Operators based on their expertise without requiring knowledge of Kubernetes API complexities.
  • Operator Lifecycle Management: Oversees installation, updates, and management of the lifecycle of all of the Operators (and their associated services) running across a Kubernetes cluster.
  • Operator Metering (joining in the coming months): Enables usage reporting for Operators that provide specialized services.

The primary focus of this release is to bring the Kubernetes community together into a single project. CoreOS has preached this for years and it obviously hasn’t changed since being acquired by RedHat.

“By sharing this Framework with the community, we hope to enable an ecosystem of builders to more easily create their applications on Kubernetes via a common method and also provide a standardized set of tools to build consistent applications.”

Kubernetes has stood out as a tool due to its community approach. Everyone benefits from an effective open source project. The Operator Framework empowers DevOps teams to make optimal Kubernetes applications. Despite the effectiveness of containers and Kubernetes, having some help is always important. Tools like this Operator Framework make container development significantly easier.
