Rackspace Announces Fully Managed Kubernetes-as-a-Service

Kubernetes has become prevalent throughout the IT world. It has been supplemented by community projects and various new products from large companies. Rackspace is the latest to enter this market with today’s announcement of Rackspace Kubernetes-as-a-service.

Rackspace Kubernetes-as-a-Service is fully managed. This allows organizations to focus on the important aspects of Kubernetes. This is similar to managed service providers helping organizations run their cloud infrastructure. Managing a Kubernetes environment is difficult for most businesses. Optimizing your Kubernetes workload requires some help.

A multi-cloud approach is growing in popularity. Kubernetes helps make this possible, as workloads become easier to move and manage. Rackspace Kubernetes-as-a-service allows customers to deploy and managed Kubernetes clusters across cloud environments. It uses a single management platform for clusters spanning multiple cloud platforms. This is all operated by Rackspace, eliminating a lot of management complexity in multi-cloud.

Rackspace works to help customers move to container-based workloads. Beyond this, though, they help customers manage “Day 2” operations. This includes updates, upgrades, patching and security hardening for Kubernetes, all managed cluster services, and the node operating system. Getting started with Kubernetes can sometimes be overwhelming, this approach would be helpful for any DevOps team.

Security is something many people are concerned with regarding Kubernetes. Since Rackspace manages this Kubernetes-as-a-Service, security is managed as well. Rackspace secures the infrastructure to the cluster. They validate and vet each component themselves. This is crucial, considering how easy it is to accidentally use an unsecure component found on GitHub or another online library.

Container management and user access have historically been an issue. Rackspace provides static container scanning and enables customers to restrict user access to the environment. Restricting user access may seem like a minor detail, but irresponsible management caused a major cryptojacking hack against Tesla. Rackspace Kubernetes-as-a-Service makes this process easier and more secure.
