Cisco recently announced their upcoming Cisco Container Platform (CCP). The CCP is a turnkey, open and production-grade software container platform. It utilizes Google’s open source Kubernetes container software. It will be 100 percent upstream Kubernetes to enable development and operations teams configure, deploy, and manage container clusters. This provides DevOps teams with the increased speed they need, due to the simplicity of the program.

The CCP will address end-to-end management of container clusters including setup, orchestration, authentication, monitoring, networking, load balancing, and optimization. This platform is also extensible to other open deployment environments. It can even extend to networking, security, analytics, and management tools.

Automating repetitive tasks is a core tenant in DevOps. The official press release emphasizes automation. They state, “As a single solution that automates repetitive tasks, the Cisco Container Platform can help increase operational efficiencies and drive faster time to value by eliminated the need for IT teams to source, configure, and support multiple disparate solutions.”

Saving time is a crucial component of any container platform. Being able to dedicate more time to internal innovation and collaborating is invaluable. Container management solutions can offer this, and Cisco recognizes how valuable it can be. This is obviously why they’re jumping into this marketplace.

Cisco follows many of its container peers in offering open-source components and an open architecture. Their choice of Kubernetes ensures that they will follow the standardization set up by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

Kubernetes also encourages collaboration with Google Cloud. Cisco says that they’ve worked closely with Google Cloud to optimize the Kubernetes platform for on-premises production environments. This gives customers the peace of mind of having a stable cloud environment.

The CCP will be available as software optimized with Cisco HyperFlex 3.0 in April 2018. During summer 2018, it will be available as software supported on VM infrastructure, bare metal, and public cloud.
