HTML5: Enterprise Ready?

Spotlight on HTML5

Spotlight on HTML5David Akka at Apps Tech News asks: What needs to be addressed to make HTML5 enterprise-ready?

So, is HTML5 ready for enterprise apps today?

Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t think so. The Facebook founder admitted last month that “biggest strategic mistake we’ve ever made” was relying too much on HTML5. Renée James, Senior VP of Software and Services at Intel agrees, saying “HTML5 is designed to be a cross-platform technology… and while I know there are a lot of differing opinions, we all agree it’s been very over-hyped.”

Ouch.

Hold the (smart) phone, says David Akka, before saying HTML5 will never be good for enterprise. He cites a Gartner 2012 report:

Gartner, in their 2012 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies chart, showed HTML5 as nearing its hype peak and has predicted that it will become a mature technology in the next 5 – 10 years.

However, David says that there are several challenges that HTML5 will need to address before being Enterprise-Ready, especially for transaction based mobile apps. Those challenges revolve around browser support, communication and WebSockets.

Mr. Akka concludes:

The hype around HTML5 continues to gather momentum, yet, as a reliable development tool for the enterprise it will not be ready for another 2-4 years. Until then HTML5 will remain best suited for the consumer applications and a ‘work in progress’ for the enterprise projects.

I’d say it’s time to check out some of the MEAP solutions out there if enterprise app development is what you need.
