SailPoint Updates SecurityIQ for Unstructured Data Dealings

DatabankSailPoint has announced the latest version of SecurityIQ, the identity and access management company’s data access governance (DAG) solution. With this update, SailPoint customers can now manage unstructured data in a wide variety of formats with Security IQ.

Unstructured data, according to Tech Target, is “a generic label for describing data that is not contained in a database or some other type of data structure.”  Unstructured data can be textual or non-textual, and textual unstructured data is generally generated by things like email, text messages, and PowerPoint presentations—things that most enterprises would prefer to have secured.

Managing unstructured data brings new challenges to both controlling and governing access to this type of data. For example, the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires material changes in how and where organizations store customer data, and more importantly how they grant access to that data to employees, contractors and business partners.

According to the recently published Gartner Magic Quadrant for Identity Governance and Administration (IGA), “Customers are realizing that application and data access are closely related, which is driving interest in integration of IGA with DAG products for more mature organizations.” The report goes on to say that “By 2020, 50% of enterprises with identity governance and administration (IGA) deployments will have invested in data access governance (DAG) for tighter data access control, up from less than 10% today.”

With SecurityIQ, SailPoint hopes to help organizations find and protect sensitive unstructured data, enabling them to meet regulatory requirements by providing proof of compliance during audits; and increases staff productivity by reducing time spent on diagnostics, forensics, and data administration tasks.

SecurityIQ integrates with SailPoint’s identity governance solutions and also includes patent-pending collaboration technology for identifying data owners.

“The growing amount of unstructured data poses a serious risk for organizations,” said Paul Trulove, vice president of product management at SailPoint. “Given the volume of data that exists across file servers, email, cloud storage services and SharePoint sites, visibility is increasingly becoming a significant challenge. With SecurityIQ, particularly when coupled with SailPoint’s industry-leading identity governance solutions, organizations can now manage access to all data through a common set of tools and processes. Having a unified approach to securing access to sensitive data, whether it resides in applications or in files, or on-premises or in the cloud, is a critical component of managing risk and complying with global regulatory requirements.”
